Virginia McCullough, 36, has been sentenced to life in prison, with a minimum term of 36 years, after being convicted of murdering her parents and living with their bodies for four years. McCullough poisoned her father, John McCullough, 70, by crushing prescription medication into his alcoholic drinks, and the following day, brutally murdered her mother, Lois McCullough, 71, by beating her with a hammer and stabbing her multiple times.
The murders occurred in June 2019 at the family's home in Great Baddow, Essex, where McCullough continued to live with the bodies. She built a makeshift tomb for her father using masonry blocks and concealed her mother’s body in a wardrobe. The crime was discovered after concerned doctors alerted police when her parents missed appointments, leading officers to force entry into the home in September 2023.
McCullough confessed to the murders upon her arrest, acknowledging that she had planned the killings since March 2019. She admitted to spending her parents’ pensions and engaging in online gambling. Her siblings, devastated by the loss of their parents, expressed horror and betrayal at McCullough’s actions. The judge condemned her premeditated crimes, citing her gross violation of trust.
