While a Davante Adams trade to the 49ers may not be likely, San Francisco general manager John Lynch isn't completely shutting down the idea. During an interview on KNBR’s “Murph & Markus” Friday morning, Lynch acknowledged Adams’ talent while hinting that the 49ers are always open to exploring options.
“We like our group. Davante's a hell of a player,” Lynch stated. “One thing we’ve shown is we’re always looking. We’re never afraid to see what’s out there, and we’re never afraid to pull the trigger. But coming into this year, we feel our roster is in a pretty good spot.”
Despite the 49ers dealing with some injuries, Lynch made it clear that the organization won’t completely close the door on adding talent. “We’ll never say never. It’s got to work for both sides, but it’s got to work for us. I won’t comment on any specific player, but right now we like where our roster is at.”
Adams reportedly wants out of Las Vegas after two seasons with the Raiders, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The All-Pro receiver is said to prefer reuniting with his former quarterbacks—either Aaron Rodgers with the New York Jets or Derek Carr with the New Orleans Saints—but he’s open to other options as well.
Several teams, including the Pittsburgh Steelers, Baltimore Ravens, Dallas Cowboys, and 49ers, have shown interest or have been identified as potential landing spots, NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport reported Thursday.
Lynch and the 49ers' front office have a reputation for making bold moves when others least expect it, and Lynch’s recent comments only reinforce that nothing is ever truly off the table in Santa Clara. Whether or not the 49ers pursue Adams, it’s clear that they’re always playing chess while others play checkers.
